COMMUNICATIONS
If I had to choose one thing that was most important to the success of a player, a team, a league and even a life, that would be communications. Honest, blunt, straightforward communications.
Lack of communication, poor communications and miscommunications have caused strife, divorces, fights and even wars. Anyway, how do I know if I am old, fat and ugly unless I am told ?
Joe hammers this home almost daily in his notes to the ABA teams...well, not that I am old, fat and ugly, but that communications are so very important.
I have been with the ABA only a few months, we have not even played a game yet, and I could already cite numerous examples of great communications as well as many communication gaffes. I have been insulted, misunderstood, cursed out and praised...sometimes in the same sentences. Marsha (Jersey) is an example of a good communicator within the league as well as from team to team. She is involved, and you can tell from her communications that she cares about the players, her team and the league and wants to better them all. (there ARE others, she was just an example.)
At times, I can be so blunt that I rub people wrong, but to me, that is preferable to someone needing to guess where I stand. Employment contracts can run for pages upon pages. Mine are simple: they say a) run it like a profession; b) lie to me and I will fire you; c) steal from me and I will put you in jail. Thats it ! No if's, and's or buts. Honest, blunt and strarightforward.
One of my favorite sayings is that if I can't believe everything that comes out of your mouth, I would rather not talk to you because I dont have the time, patience nor desire to separate the wheat from the chaffe.
Other types of conversation from other personalities work as well. The bottom line being that though each person is different and approach things differently, your communications and the way you communicate, and the way that I communicate should be always in the forefront because even if you think I am old, fat and ugly...it doesn't matter. We are all here for the same things as Marsha: The Players, the Teams and the League.
